This is the Coupe to get when you want more headroom and a wider spread of sound on stage. The '72 Coupe dishes out 72 watts of complex, harmonically rich tone, reacting to your most subtle playing techniques. And when you need more balls, it's so there. Technically speaking, the '72 Coupe runs on four 6L6 power tubes with a 12AX7 preamp. Furthermore, it uses a self-biased power amp design in tandem with a secondary, partially fixed-bias technique. This produces an amplifier with the best of both worlds: self-biased reliability and the increased power and dynamics of a fixed bias design.Drawing on its heritage, Kustom teamed up with U.S. speaker manufacturer Eminence to produce a new driver exclusively for the Coupe Series. The result is the KEI™ (Kustom-Eminence Integrated) Turbo 12™ speaker. With its distinctive aluminum dust cap, the Turbo 12 is a modern interpretation of a vintage speaker design that gives players a taste of the original speaker's tonal properties, which were great for cleaner tones, while successfully handling more modern, high-gain sounds as well. The '72 Coupe features two channels (Rhythm/Lead), each with own Master Volume control which lets users dial in anything from gritty, medium-gain sounds to scorching, full-on hard rock tones. Each channel also provides a Pull-Bright function that, when activated, tightens up the low-end response for a chunkier, British-type tone. When not pulled, the tonal response is fuller and rounder, a more "American" tone. By the way, the EQ (Bass, Middle, Treble) reflects pure, vintage Kustom specifications. The '72 Coupe also provides an Accutronics Reverb unit with Tone control (another vintage Kustom feature) and classic Tremolo and Vibrato effects. You'll also find a Tube-Driven Effects Loop, a speaker-emulated Direct Out, a Baltic Birch cabinet and a 3-function footswitch that switches channels, turns the effects on or off, and also activates a 10db overall volume boost for solos. The '72 Coupe is a highly tuned amplifier that sounds as hot as it looks.
This was Marshall's first two channel amp and one of Jim Marshall himself's favourites! With a foot-switchable volume boost, reverb, effects loop and volume-controllable DI-out, this scorching valve-driven classic keeps up with and (more often then not!) exceeds its modern counterparts.
